Frequently Used Terms on This Site

Refers to engineering design and construction rules that establish baseline criterion for safety.

Codes are intended for wide application across an industry; this makes them easily adopted.

Codes are not laws.  But they become laws if adopted by a jurisdiction, enforced by regulatory policy, or stipulated by a business contract/purchase order.

There are many engineering codes. The one most talked about on my page is the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.  On occasion I may talk about others such as NPFA or ICC.

An event (often a week in duration) composed of dozens of committee meetings. During these meetings the members discuss topics and proposed changes to the Codes/Standards documents under its purview.

ASME's Boiler and Pressure Vessel meeting are often referred to as "Code Week."

Other organizations usually call their event "Committee Week."

A document that tells the requirements for a specific product, practice, operation or execution.

Standards are not automatically laws.  But they become law if adopted by a jurisdiction, enforced by regulatory policy, or stipulated by a business contract/purchase order.

The words "standard" and "specification" are often used interchangeably.   Specifications, however, can delve into a deeper level of detail and preciseness than a standard.
